Arizona State University (also referred to as ASU ,or Arizona State ) is the largest public research university in the United States under a single administration, with a 2009 student enrollment of 68,064. ASU is spread across four campuses in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area . [ 7 ]
ASU was founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory in Tempe, Arizona . In 1945, the school came under control of the Arizona Board of Regents and was renamed "Arizona State College." [ 8 ] In 1958, a statewide ballot measure renamed the school "Arizona State University." From its original campus in Tempe , ASU expanded in 1984, establishing the West campus in northwest Phoenix , followed by the 1996 addition of the Polytechnic campus in eastern Mesa and the 2006 addition of the Downtown Phoenix campus . All four campuses are accredited as a single institution by the Higher Learning Commission . [ 9 ]
In the 2008-2009 academic year, 15,610 students graduated from ASU. [ 10 ] In 2009, 156 National Merit Scholars chose to attend ASU, [ 10 ] many of which are part of Barrett, The Honors College . Under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education , ASU is classified as a Research University with Very High research activity.

Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media StudiesCollege of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The B.A. in Film and Media Studies provides students with skills that can be applied in a number of fields: from the entertainment industry, including film, television and new media, to local media arts organizations, teaching and research. Based in a broad liberal arts education focused on the humanities, our students graduate with the ability to think analytically and speak and write clearly and persuasively — skills in demand across almost all sectors of the global economy. Our program develops these skills through a variety of discussion-based and writing intensive courses.
Film and Media Studies offers distance learning designed for the diverse ways students learn. Like our brick and mortar courses, distance learning courses emphasize interactivity and include numerous clips from movies and television shows. Their distinct feature as online courses, however, is that they are built around streaming audio lectures synchronized with visual slides. All of the learning materials are available to students 24/7.
After completing the core, Film and Media Studies majors elect one of the following areas of emphasis: Media and Society, Styles and Genres or Screenwriting. Students interested in the online BA in Film Media Studies should contact the program at (480) 965-6747.
Bachelor of Arts in Political ScienceCollege of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The Bachelor of Arts in political science offers students the necessary skills and knowledge to participate effectively as citizens in a democratic political system and to flourish in the rapidly developing globalization of the world's political institutions, cultures and economies. The political science major aims to provide students with the tools and skills necessary to make connections linking theory with "real world" problems and ideas.

Our graduates have gone on to some of the country's most prestigious graduate schools and programs, such as Harvard and Duke Law schools, and have been admitted to doctoral programs at Columbia, UCLA, Duke, Oxford, the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, and UCSD, to name a few. Graduating seniors find a range of employment opportunities in the fields of law, politics, education, journalism, communications, and public service. For example, some of our graduating seniors have been hired to work at the Federal Reserve, the Arizona Governer's office, and local and national newspapers. Other department alumni have reached high-level positions at major corporations such as Nike and Goodyear. Others have attained high rank in state government and the judicial system. Of the nine College of Liberal Arts and Sciences alumni who have been inducted into the College's Hall of Fame, three are graduates of the Political Science Department. Many of our majors go on to law school, and a sizeable number go on to get MBAs.
New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences
Overview
Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of individuals and groups. The online program will provide a diverse curriculum that addresses multiple perspectives within the field of psychology. Topics within these perspectives include, but are not limited to: clinical; cognitive systems/behavioral neuroscience; cross-cultural; developmental; organizational and social psychology. A strong emphasis is placed on developing skills in critical thinking and reasoning, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and writing in order to prepare each student for a career or graduate study.

The BA in Psychology is excellent preparation for those who desire to continue graduate study. It also prepares graduates for the workforce by providing the broad based skills that many types of employers value.
Bachelor of Liberal StudiesSchool of Letters and Sciences
The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (B.L.S.) is a transdisciplinary program, offering students the opportunity to take classes across various disciplines and view the world from multiple perspectives—an ideal degree for students with a wide range of interests.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Family and Human Development offers course work on the development of individuals and families as they relate to their social worlds. The concentration in family studies and child development provides a focus on the development of children, adults and families. Students take a wide variety of courses on contemporary issues related to human development from infancy through the end of the life span, and the development, formation and dissolution of families and develop proficiency in written communication, computer skills, statistics and research methods.
Family and Human Development online classes are extremely dynamic and interactive and utilize Blackboard as a learning platform.

How to Register for Classes
Step One: Apply for Admission
All new students will first need to apply for admission to ASU. All new undergraduate students should also follow these additional steps for enrollment to ASU. Continuing ASU students can skip this step and move on to step two.Step Two: Check Enrollment Appointments
After admission, students should check their enrollment appointments. This is the date and time that students can begin registering for the upcoming semester. While students can register anytime from the beginning of their enrollment appointment through the end of the registration period, ASU strongly encourages students to register as soon as possible. Newly admitted freshmen will have their enrollment appointment on the day they attend their Orientation Program . Students can sign in to My ASU to view the date and time of their enrollment appointment. Note: enrollment appointments are not required for the summer or winter sessions. Consult the Academic Calendar for more information on important dates and deadlines.Step Three: Clear any Registration Holds
Students should sign in to My ASU to determine if they have any holds that will prevent them from registering for classes. Examples of registration holds include missing transcripts, unpaid fees, academic advising requirements and immunizations requirements. Clearing registration holds as quickly as possible avoids delays in registration which can impact student's chances of getting the classes and schedule that is for them.
Step Four: Register for Classes
Once students have cleared any registration holds and their enrollment appointment has arrived, they are ready to register for classes. Students may register for classes online or in person . Students can also search for available classes online or browse a list of classes in pdf format .Step Five: Pay Tuition and Fees
Once students are registered they can sign in to My ASU to view and/or pay their tuition and fees. More information concerning how tuition and fees are calculated and important deadlines for paying tuition and fees is available on our Student Business Service's web page .
Step Six: Purchase Textbooks
Students can sign in to My ASU to review their class schedule, obtain their required book list, and order textbooks through the ASU Bookstores .
