Airport

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been owned and operated by the City of Phoenix since 1935. Back in the 1930's, the Airport had one runway. No one could have imagined the tremendous growth that would come to the Phoenix area and as a result, to the Airport.

Security

Safety and security are the top priorities at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Sky Harbor has multiple layers of security, some that you see and some that are more behind the scenes. The Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, oversees the security checkpoints at Sky Harbor. There is also a Phoenix Police Airport Bureau located on-Airport, in addition to two Phoenix Fire Stations. Police officers can be seen at all hours, seven days a week, patrolling the roadways in their vehicles, as well as inside the terminals on foot and even on bicycles. Eight Phoenix Police officers at Sky Harbor partner with explosive detection canines, which check unattended bags and other suspicious items. If you ever have a question at Sky Harbor, feel free to walk up to a police officer and ask - our officers know the Airport inside and out.

Sky Harbor also has an operations staff which is responsible for safety and security on the curbs, inside of the terminals and in the Air Operations Area where the runways and taxiways are located. Sky Harbor Operation staff encourages all visitors to keep their eye out for suspicious activity and to report to an Airport employee anything that seems out of place. Sky Harbor offers specific tips on how everyone can assist with Airport security in a program called SOAR or Secure Our Airport Responsibly.

Airport Facts

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the ten busiest in the world with a $90 million daily economic impact. On a typical day:

Airport Development

Phoenix Sky Harbor serves more than 100,000 passengers, with 1,500 flights per day, and a daily economic impact that surpasses $90 million for the Phoenix metro area. We take pride in meeting the needs of our region's thriving population, and planned improvements will add to our ability to remain America's Friendliest Airportâ„¢. In 10 years, five million people are projected to live in the Valley and six million by 2020. Sky Harbor serves nearly 40 million passengers every year. To keep pace with the Valley's growth, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport will need more terminal space and parking, better roads, airfield improvements, and options for moving people and airplanes around the Airport more quickly. Upcoming improvements to Sky Harbor are often referred to as the Airport Development Plan.
